2/13/2023 0 Comments Darktable negative conversionI really hope darktable improves their Invert module and the way colour is handled with input profiles, because I'd prefer to use just one software solution. They have a dedicated Film Negative module that handles the inversion, exposure and colours in just a few clicks. If you haven't tried it already, try the latest release of RawTherapee to see how much easier it is. So, all in all, I've found that darktable is not ideal for converting negatives. There's then quite a bit of manual tuning to get the colours and contrast right. I have to really crank up the exposure using Unbreak input profile and the exposure modules. The key was changing the input color profile because the default enhanced color matrix just doesn't play nice with film negatives.īut changing to the Adobe compatible input profile makes my images very dark. I have been using Lightroom and Photoshop and I have a very effective workflow, but I'm cancelling my Adobe subscription so have been trying out FOSS software recently. Converting negs has been an ongoing project (and struggle) of mine for the last 10 years or so. There are a number of variants on this technique one of the best regarded of which has been ‘Digital ICE’. This is a subject I'm very interested in because I've been scanning in and processing negatives for several years. This is done by scanning the film with an infra-red light source which will pass straight through the image dyes on a negative or slide as if they were transparent, but which is absorbed by scratches and dust.
